My master's thesis on the Banking Union - Amsterdam

I have a keen interest in financial markets (I have been a stock market investor for many years), ethics and regulations. During the latest financial crisis, I was intrigued by the global finance and investment markets.

In the academic year of 2012-2013, I participated in the “Honours Master Class: Research Lab”, at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where I studied the role of the European Central Bank within the European System of Financial Supervision. This Master Class was led by Professors E. Hey and S. Taekema.

In 2013, I also participated in a special Master Class from Jean-Claude Trichet, the former ECB president, which he gave to 40 selected Erasmus University students.

With the passage of time, I became convinced that we must do things differently in our financial markets. This is why in 2017 I followed a Master program “Law, Markets and Behavior”, a joint program of the University of Amsterdam and the VU University. I graduated cum laude in 2018.

The banking union’s first pillar is the single supervisory mechanism (SSM), which seeks to 'protect the safety and soundness of credit institutions and the stability of the financial system'. My thesis investigates whether the current legal framework on which the SSM is built supports the mechanism to achieve its financial stability objective.
